In the winter of 1976, my best friend and I set out on a road trip to the area of Richmond, Va. to visit a friend of ours that had moved there recently. We had asked him what we could bring him and he told us a case of Dixie. As we were traveling we were on the CB radio the whole way. My “handle” was at first “Hustler”, but I had discovered there were more people out there with the same handle. So I became the “Metairie Hustler”. Well as we were out on the road away from New Orleans, it became clear that no one knew what or where Metairie was. Now in the middle of the trip, I was trying to reinvent my handle and the first thing that comes to mind is the Dixie Beer in the back seat. My co-driver whose handle was “Dagit”, says, “Well there you go, Dixie!” At that moment “The Dixie Hustler” came to be. That stuck with me through the years and a lot of people just called me “Dixie” for a long time after that even after the CB days came to an end. That was a great memory!
